The Riptide Movement – ‘Animal’
Dublin rockers The Riptide Movement have found themselves on the cusp of their ‘big break’ for a number of years, building up a solid reputation within the Irish music scene and developing their sound by busking and touring extensively, both in Ireland and abroad. Since signing a record deal with Universal Music near the start of 2014, the hard-working group have been part of an exciting series of developments, pushing them closer to stardom than ever. With some huge gigs, like an appearance at Glastonbury, under their belt and their gold-selling third album, Getting Through, spawning a number of hit singles, it’s safe to say that the past year has brought the lads as close to global recognition as they’ve ever been.
Album-opener ‘Animal’ is the latest single from the well-received Getting Through, which was just released in the UK on Monday the 1st of June. The energetic track bears all the hallmarks of The Riptide Movement’s own brand of working-class rock n’ roll. Lead vocalist, Mal Tuohy, belts out a rousing chorus, the drumming is frenetic and lively, the jangling guitar riff is infectious and well-implemented horn blasts add something of a big-band feel to the instrumentation.
The Riptide Movement aren’t breaking any new musical ground with their latest single, but catchy melodies and memorable choruses, commodities which elude many artists, are becoming something of a signature for the band. The Lucan lads have barely had time to pause for breath over the past year, and if they continue to churn out ready-made hits like ‘Animal’, they won’t have much free time over the next year either.
