Mongrel State – ‘Stray Dogs’
Diverse Dublin four-piece Mongrel State are gearing up to release their debut studio album Mestizo on 29 January. The album promises to be an eclectic mix of styles, owing to the myriad influences of the multicultural quartet, and lead single ‘Stray Dogs’ highlights their varied approach.
‘Stray Dogs’ is a mesh of rockabilly and Latin American influences with something of a Mariachi band in there too. Dubliner Darren Flynn’s vocal delivery adds an Irish edge not often heard against the musical backdrop of this track and his band-mates provide rousing backing vocals. The song is short and sweet, bursting with energy from the outset and failing to let up throughout its brief duration, embodying the soul of a bandit in the old Wild West.
‘Stray Dogs’, along with the rest of the album, was recorded by Gavin Glass at Orphan Recordings in Dublin, and Glass’ clean production ensures clarity despite the frantic nature of the track, with nothing lost in the mix.
Mongrel State will be launching Mestizo in Whelan’s on 30 January, before embarking on a nationwide tour, where the frenetic energy of ‘Straw Dogs’ will undoubtedly be on display.
