Colin Smith and Ari Hest at The Workman’s Club (review & photos)
Dublin native Colin Smith and his friend an tour partner Ari Hest had a co-headlining performance at The Workman’s Club last Thursday, April 18th.
Born in Dublin, Colin Smith left his homeland for New York to pursue his musical career. Although The Big Apple was kind to him, Colin hasn’t forgotten his roots and still plays Dublin venues every once in a while.
Delayed by an hour because Colin and Ari’s late arrival due to bad weather, the gig started with a lot of energy from the first tune, aided by the loud group of fans that came to see Colin. As the artists admitted, their tour was planned to have a headliner and a support each night, without having the same headliner every time. After realizing just how good they were together, the two artists decided to play a whole set together, switching between Colin’s and Ari’s tunes.
Their Workman’s Club performance was highly entertaining, with Colin sharing stories and jokes between the songs. Both artists are excellent guitarists and, even though they played an acoustic set, their music was very complex. A nice surprise was the appearance of Irish violinist Maria Mason with Ari and Colin on stage for a few songs. The show ended after two hours full of good music, with Colin performing one of his tunes alone, with tambourine, guitar, bass and vocals recorded and looped to create a performance worthy of a grand finale for a great set.
