Exploding Eyes - Irish Band Of The Week

This week’s Irish Band of the Week is Exploding Eyes, an alt/psych rock trio based in Dublin. Drawing on the more deviant musical influences of the 60s and 70s, these boys are bringing a more alternative feel to the Irish music scene drawing on more experimental styles to create a purely unique experience for fans.

Comprised of Brian Gallagher on drums (Humanzi), Robbie Brady on bass/vocals/theremin (The Things, Cheap Freaks) and Al Dodd on guitar/vocals (Cheap Freaks, DC Pakt), the band had already had significant experience on the Irish music scene with their preceding bands. However, united as Exploding Eyes, the threesome were able to focus on their overarching music interests-ever prevalent in their sound – ranging from DEviants, Pink Fairies, and Andromeda. These cornerstones of the UK underground music scene in the 60s and 70s became cornerstones to the sound of the band, already garnering an impressive reputation throughout Ireland for having one of the most psychedelic and entrancing live performances.

However, the band can also be noted for their progressive rock ‘n’ roll undertones throughout their music, this can be partially accredited to their collaboration with Detroit producer Jim Diamond, who has worked with the likes of the White Stripes and Dirtbombs. Their latest, self-titled album has undoubtedly benefited from Diamond’s Midas touch. The standout track being, ‘We Need Love’, which was released in early 2016. The track draws on a wide range of influences, from garage to more classic rock, and it’s a tantalising taste of things to come for the lads in 2017.

Exploding Eyes are launching their album at Whelan’s (Upstairs) on 3 February 2017.
