Gypsies On The Autobahn – Irish Band of the Week
This week’s “Irish Band of the Week” aren’t exactly newcomers to the music scene. Formed in 2009, Gypsies on the Autobahn, have gathered up a huge Irish following and all on the basis of demos and live gigs!
It’s Gypsies on the Autobahn’s stellar reputation for live gigs that makes them DublinConcerts.ie’s Irish Band of the Week this week and after having photographed them at Vicar Street last week while supporting Little Green Cars, we couldn’t ignore the talent of these Dubliners. The band consists of two brothers, James Smith on vocals and his brother Dan and flanked by Gary Quinn and Niall Mooney. The band reek of professionalism and are a group of musicians that just work so wonderfully together.
They’ve taken to the stages of Electric Picnic, Other Voices Live and The Academy, not to mention opening for acts such as Mystery Jets, Dizzee Rascal and fellow Irish band and friends, the wonderful Little Green Cars. Their live gigs consistently create a buzz on the music scene, their music is the kind you’ll find yourself singing days later and yet, they’re still unsigned; something which baffles us here at DublinConcerts.ie.
Gypsies on the Autobahn stand out a mile in the Irish Music Scene’s never-ending sea of indie rockers, and what sets them apart is these aren’t wanna be rockstars, these guys have something special; genuine talent. A sound that can’t be matched and cannot quite be contained into one genre label, but culminates alternative indie, pop and rock into an unstoppable sound is their selling point. Aided by the incredibly distinctive voice of frontman James Smith, you can’t help but realise this is a rare and remarkable band and sound.
Their track “Hidden” is anthemic, a fan favourite at gigs and a prime example of the lyrical depth they bring to an almost pop-rock sound. The lyrical depth of Irish bands never fails to impress me these days, but Gypsies on the Autobahn understand exactly how to mix depth and pop to create the hooks which ensure that we here at DublinConcerts.ie have them on repeat for a week.
Gypsies on the Autobahn are currently touring with Little Green Cars on their UK tour, but it won’t be long until these lads are back to grace the stages of their home isle. You can find out more about them by checking out their Facebook page and some of their incredible tracks can be found on their Soundcloud.
