Happy Mondays at Leopardstown Racecourse – Review and Photos
Happy Mondays – Leopardstown – August 15th
It was a wet night in Dublin as Happy Mondays took to the stage in Leopardstown as part of the Bulmers Live Festival. Arriving on stage 25 minutes late, but to a patient crowd, the Manchester rave-rockers gave it everything. With a crowd full of 40-somethings reminiscing their teenage years mixed with a newer crowd, they didn’t let the rain dampen their fun.
The night kicked off with a classic in ‘Loose Fit’, which soon cheered up the crowd. The night continued like it was a Greatest Hits tour with the tunes ‘Kinky Afro’ – which brought Bez to the stage for the first time of the night – and Dennis & Lois. Accompanied as usual on stage by singer Rowetta, the Mondays were in fine form.
With Shaun reading lyrics from ’24 Hour Party People’ you just knew what was to follow. The place was hopping for 15 minutes from that and ‘Hallelujah’ which followed.
Overall the night wasn’t ruined by the rain. From people head nodding to ‘Mad Cyril’ and screaming out the lyrics to ‘Step On’, no one seemed to really pay much heed to the weather. It was a short show as they had an After Show in the Academy in Dublin to get to but it left the fans with enough of a fix until next time…Maybe!
After a few break ups and reunions, one thing stands out is that these guys never forgot how to play together.
