Mark Geary – Irish Band Of The Week
With four studio albums, a live album and several soundtracks to his credit, it’s fair to say that Mark Geary is probably a more established act than the ones we usually feature in this section. In spite of this we felt that he was deserving of our Irish Band of the Week title this week in light of the recent release of his song ‘Christmas Biscuits’. Re-recorded with Glen Hansard, all proceeds from the sale of the song will go to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a worthy cause at this time of year.
Having emigrated to New York at a young age, Geary honed his craft by performing in small venues all over the city before eventually moving up to the legendary Sin É venue, playing alongside the likes of Jeff Buckley and Sinead O’Connor. This apprenticeship is evident in his accomplished live performances; Geary’s easy going manner and songs that are vignettes of everyday life have won over audiences worldwide. ‘Christmas Biscuits’, a song written by Geary while living in New York and missing both the good and bad parts of Christmas back home in Ireland is a perfect example of his superbly crafted song writing and is certainly worth a charitable donation of a euro or two.
There’s a good chance that he’ll turn up on Grafton Street this evening for the annual busk organised by his friend and collaborator Glen Hansard. But if you’re too busy buying those last minute items that you meant to buy a week ago, Mark is playing in the Grand Social on 28th December. With support coming from the excellent Ana Gog, this is one Christmas gig that shouldn’t be missed.
