Oddsocks – Irish Band Of The Week
This week’s Irish Band of the Week are a charming four-piece from Sligo who ‘aspire to remember the importance of the elements that make for great music: melody, harmony and groove’. Ambitious, right? However, in the four years since the boys formed their band they’ve focused on developing a musical style that is rich, melodious, and full of rhythm and groove. Oddsocks are comprised of Anthony Mannion on guitar/vocals, Luke Mercer on guitar/vocals, Michael Conefrey on bass/vocals and Danny Young on Drums/vocals. The foursome first met in school in Sligo and, united by their love of classical rock they forged an incredibly steadfast bond, which encouraged them to pursue musical success.
In March of 2013, Oddsocks released their latest EP, There’s Something Going On, under their own label (the wonderfully titled Jeanie Mac Records), after their debut album It’s Time. Along with this, the boys debuted their single of the same name and a complimentary music video on 18 March which was met with praise and delight. The band revel in rhythmic guitar, but the real beauty of Oddsocks is their songwriting. It’s a dynamic craft which translates perfectly into their live performances. Yet their sound has been enhanced by the skills of keyboard player Kieran Quinn who, through the use of the Hammond organ, Rhodes piano and grand piano, helps to create a different mood not heard before with Oddsocks.
Since then, the band have toured throughout Scotland, England, France, Holland, and the festival circuit, including Electric Picnic, Edinburgh Fringe, Volvo Ocean race, Sea Sessions. However, not ones to rest on their laurels, the band are returning to the studio to begin work on some new sounds. If you absolutely can’t wait and need a pick-me-up, then check out their wonderful track ‘I’m Just Playin”.
