otherkinThis week’s Irish Band of the Week is Dublin-based four piece Otherkin. Consisting of Luke Reilly on vocals and guitar, Conor Wynne on guitar, Rob Summons on drums and David Anthony on bass, the band have had a productive year, following up the summer release of their debut EP Broken English with the recently released single II which features two excellent new tracks, Good Drugs and Bad Drugs.

While they have been compared to various American indie rock outfits such as Weezer and Pavement, there is a lot more to their sound than these influences, as we mentioned in our review of Broken English. Indeed you can hear their sound evolving slightly with the new single and with more new music planned for release in early 2014 it will be interesting to see how the band develops.

As Dublin Concerts also recently discovered, the band are a formidable live proposition and a recent support slot with the hotly tipped Parquet Courts is sure to have grown their fan base. They also recently received praise from Rob Spragg of Alabama 3, who told them after a gig in Galway that they were ‘wicked’ – a sentiment with which we heartily concur.

Between airplay on several Dublin radio stations, support slots with one of the best new bands around and ringing endorsements from that guy who sung in Tony Soprano every week, 2013 has been kind to Otherkin. Here’s hoping they can ride that wave of good tidings in to 2014 and beyond.

Check out their new single II below and follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Soundcloud.
