Swords at Ones To Watch (photos)
Swords were the first band to perform in Whelan’s main venue last Saturday, the final day of Ones To Watch Festival.
The Dublin electro-indie trio formed in 2010 by singer Diane Anglim and drummer Ian Frawley. After recording a demo with producer Micheal Sheil, Swords were joined bassist Jarlath Canning. In 2011 the band wrote material, performed in venues around Ireland and developed their style. The end of the year came with ‘Black Baloon’, Sword’s debut EP.
Their performance at Whelan’s was a very pleasant surprise for us. The carefully arranged tunes, Diane’s voice and the whole mood of their music seemed exotic, yet very natural. They’re not like anything you would expect to her from a trio with keyboard, bass and drums but, in the same time, Sword’s music doesn’t seem like an experiment.
